Endless Windows Vista update?

My main computer is trapped in a perpetual state of update installation. The single update downloaded in a breeze but is unable to install. It's been over an hour. The computer seems to be inaccessible; F8 safe mode doesn't work. I was wondering if there is any way to safely abort the update. Otherwise I may need to resort to cable pulling [that's right].
