Is a prisoners Maximum Release Date, the Actual day that he is released from prison?

My boyfriend was incarcerated in 06. His sentence was 2 years and his Maximum Release Date was December 15, 2008. On the dcor website is says that he is still currently serving. My question is that is the MRD the day that he is truly released, or can they still hold him longer or something?
